PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Bates College scored at least one
run in all nine innings Monday afternoon en route to a 14-5 victory
over Plymouth State University in a non-conference baseball game at
Panther Park.
Senior Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) and junior Chris Burke
(Andover, Mass.) led the way for the Bobcats with three hits apiece
in the 14-hit attack, and juniors Pat Murphy (Cape Elizabeth,
Maine) and Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) each clouted home runs.
Bates won its sixth in a row to improve to 20-8 while
Plymouth State dropped to 6-23.
Junior Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H./Lebanon) recorded the victory (2-0)
on the mound for Bates, allowing just one run on six hits through
six innings and finishing with no walks or strikeouts. Three
other Bobcat hurlers worked one inning apiece to close out the
game.
Freshman Rew Wilson (Niantic, Conn.) led an 11-hit
Panther attack with two hits and a walk, including his first career
home run to put PSU on the board in the fifth inning. Junior
Dan Eagan (Norwich, Conn.) delivered a two-out,
two-run double to spark an eighth-inning Panther rally, followed by
an RBI single by junior Grant Livingston (Niantic,
Conn.). Sophomore Jimmy Higgins (South
Boston, Mass.) also added an RBI hit in the ninth inning.
The
Bobcats plated two runs in the first inning on a double by Lynd and
a sacrifice fly by junior Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine), and Murphy
hit a two-run homer in the second inning, his second of the year,
to make it 4-0. Bates got solo runs in the next three
innings, scoring one on one of PSU's six errors, one on a
sacrifice fly by Burke and one on an infield groundout.
After PSU got on the board in the last of the fifth, Bates added
two in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Lynd and an RBI single by
Webb. Freshman Kevin MacGregor (Randolph, N.J.) doubled and
scored in the seventh inning, and Simon added a solo blast,
his sixth of the season, in the eighth. Bates added three
more runs in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Beaton, an
infield grounder by Lynd and a sacrifice fly by junior pinch-hitter
Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.)
Plymouth State returns to action Wednesday with a non-conference
game at Castleton. Bates plays two games on Tuesday at UMaine
Farmington.
