NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior Ryan
McDermott (Pembroke, Mass.) singled home the winning run with one
out in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday afternoon and the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team defeated
Plymouth State University, 4-3, and swept their doubleheader in the
2010 Little East Conference opener for both teams at the UMD
Athletic Complex. The Corsairs won the opener 16-0 in a game called
after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Senior Tom Ladore (Milford, Conn.) singled home the Corsairs'
first two runs in the bottom of the second inning of the nightcap.
PSU sophomore Mike Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.)
knocked in a run for the Panthers with a fourth-inning sacrifice
fly, but junior catcher Zak Talis (Lynnfield, Mass.) restored
UMD's two-run lead with an RBI single In the fifth. PSU
tied it at 3-3 in the seventh on a run-scoring grounder by freshman
Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, N.H.) and a double by
freshman Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass.), but
Ladore doubled in the last of the ninth and scored on
McDermott's game-winning single.
Sophomore Jonathan Bishop (Woburn, Mass.)
went all the way for the Panthers and took the loss. Junior Brian
Pedrotti (Dalton, Mass.), who relieved in the eighth inning, earned
the victory for UMD.
Talis drove in two runs with a first-inning double in the opener,
and the Corsairs scored 11 runs in their next two at-bats to break
the game open, Talis had four hits and six runs batted in,
McDermott had three hits, a double and three RBIs, and Ladore and
sophomore third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, Mass.) each drove
in two runs, Freshman Karney Boff (Dighton, Mass.) pitched a
three-hitter for the win, improving to 2-0. while junior
Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.), who pitched
the first three innings for PSU, took the loss.
UMass Dartmouth, 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the Little East, will
return to action with a visit to Babson on Monday. PSU, 1-13
overall and 0-2 in the LEC, travels to Middlebury on
Wednesday.
