NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Plymouth State
University baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat
Colby-Sawyer College Thursday, 4-3, on a brisk and windy afternoon
at Kelsey Field.
The Panthers trailed 3-0 after four innings, but got on the board
with two runs in the fifth and added solo runs in the seventh and
eighth innings to pull out the win. Plymouth State improves
to 2-14 overall, while the Chargers pull even at 10-10.
The Chargers took a 2-0 advantage in their first at-bat when senior
Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.) connected on his fourth home run
of the season. He drove in junior Matt Corvo (Newtown, Pa.) who led
off with a walk. Hartery moved into sixth place on the Colby-Sawyer
all-time list for career home runs with 12.
Colby-Sawyer increased its lead in the home half of the fourth on a
RBI ground out by freshman Cameron Knight (Cambridge, Mass.).
Freshman Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass.) led off
the PSU fifth inning with a walk and was knocked in on a double by
sophomore Joe Eramo (Shirley, Mass.). After Eramo
reached third on a fly out, junior Matt Koban
(Bradford, N.H.) successfully completed a squeeze play to knock in
Plymouth State's second run.
The Panthers evened the score in the top of the seventh on a
sacrifice fly by sophomore Marcus Joyce (Scituate,
Mass.). In the eighth inning, freshman Brendan
Cosgrove (Merrimack, N.H.) led off with a walk, went to
second on a balk and then he advanced to third on a groundout. With
two outs, a fastball got away from the Colby-Sawyer catcher and
Cosgrove scampered home with the go-ahead run.
PSU junior lefthander Bryant Lausberg
(Somersworth, N.H.) shut down the Chargers in the bottom of the
eighth and ninth to earn a complete game victory.
The Chargers will host two tough TCCC opponents this weekend when
they welcome Curry to Kelsey Field on Saturday and Western New
England on Sunday. Plymouth State plays a Little Easty Conference
doubleheader Saturday at Rhode Island College.
