WATERVILLE, Maine – Colby College's
Matt Moore (Winfield, Ill.) pitched a complete game in his final
collegiate game with the Mules in a 9-3 win in the opener, but
Plymouth State University got a solid pitching performance from
sophomore Bobby Chatfield (Sharon, Conn.) in the
nightcap in a 7-5 win at Coombs Field on Sunday.
The Mules end the season at 13-16 overall, while Plymouth State
stands at 8-26.
Moore (4-1) finished with two strikeouts and no walks while
allowing eight hits. He received run support when the Mules scored
eight times in the first two innings. Richard Newton (Arlington,
Mass.) had an RBI double and Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, Conn.)
added an RBI groundout for two runs in the first inning. Colby sent
11 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the second inning.
Kenneth Kaufman (Lexington, Mass.), Ryan Conlon (Ridgefield,
Conn.), Mastrocola, and John LaMantia (Gates Mills, Ohio) all had
RBI singles in the inning and Newton had a sacrifice fly.
PSU bounced back with its three runs in the third inning on a
three-run homer by Mike Cappiello (Westfield,
N.J.).
The Mules added their final run in the fifth inning when Nikolas
Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass.) reached on a fielder's
choice, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on
Kaufman's RBI groundout.
Chatfield worked six innings in the second game and allowed just
one earned run while striking out two. Freshman Rew
Wilson (Niantic, Conn.) earned his second save for PSU.
Junior Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) had two
hits, two RBI, and scored a run for the Panthers. Senior
Steve Picco (Marshfield, Mass.) added two hits and
two runs, while freshman David Tammaro (Cheshire,
Conn.) had two hits and two RBI.
John Lerner (Canton, Mass.) smacked a two-run homer among his two
hits and scored three runs for Colby. Mastrocola also had two hits
and drove in two runs, while Taro Gold (Belmont, Mass.) had two
hits.
Plymouth State will play a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at
New England College (2:30 p.m.), and will wrap up the season
Saturday at Panther Park with a Little East Conference twinbill
against Western Connecticut State University.
