CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior
Terrell Lewis (New Boston, N.H.) shaved 0.04 seconds off his season best time to all but guarantee himself a spot at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships after an outstanding performance at the MIT Final Qualifier on Thursday evening.
Lewis entered the competition with the 19th fastest 110-meter hurdles time in the nation (14.47 seconds), with the top-20 earning bids for the NCAA Championships. He matched that time in the preliminary round, advancing to the finals as the second fastest runner. He duplicated the finish with his season best time of 14.43 seconds to move up the national rankings and all but assure himself a spot at NCAAs for the second straight year. Lewis was an All-American in the event last spring.
Senior
Jacob Rigoli (Essex, Vt.) and junior
Mike Olson (Sutton, Mass.) competed alongside Lewis in a final attempt to reach the championships themselves. Rigoli made his mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.79 meters to end his season just outside the top 20, while Olson showed off his speed in the 800-meter run with a season best time of 1:54.36 to cap the season as one of the fastest in the event.
"I'm proud of Mike and Jacob for seeing their season through to the end," said head coach
John Ostler. They both got some great experience that will benefit them greatly next year. Terrell is back where he belongs. I know a lot of hurdlers across the country would have preferred he didn't qualify, but he did not oblige. His best is yet to come. I expect big things for him next week."
Lewis will officially learn his fate when the NCAA reveals the field in a press release on NCAA.com on Friday (May 20).
