BB: Quinn goes deep again, Faherty drives in five as Panthers split with La Roche

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior Danny Quinn (Holliston, Mass.) homered for the third straight game and sophomore Andrew Faherty (Phoenix, Ariz.) drove in five runs as Plymouth State University split a double header with La Roche University in the final day of the Myrtle Beach College Baseball Spring Training at Griffith Field on Friday.

La Roche exploded for 13 runs in the fourth inning of the opener. Quinn socked his fourth homer in five games and graduate student Nick Healey (Campton, N.H.) also went deep as the Panthers plated six runs between the fourth and fifth innings, but the early deficit proved too large in a 17-7 setback.

Plymouth State rebounded in game two. PSU jumped ahead with a four-spot in the top of the first, with Faherty driving in two with a double. La Roche countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Faherty blasted a three-run shot in the third and the Panthers' pitchers made the lead stand.

Plymouth State moves to 2-6, while La Roche goes to 4-7.

The Basics:
  • GAME ONE: Plymouth State 7, La Roche 17
  • GAME TWO: Plymouth State 7, La Roche 3
    • Plymouth State (2-6)
    • La Roche (4-7)

How it Happened (Game One):
  • La Roche took a 2-0 lead in the second but the Panthers got one right back in the bottom of the frame. Junior Adrian Siravo (Gilmanton, N.H.), Healey and sophomore Tyler Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) all singled and junior Owen Baum (Saint Michaels, Md.) lofted a sac fly to center to make it 2-1.
  • The Redhawks exploded for 13 runs on nine hits in the fourth to go up 15-1.
  • Quinn homered to lead off the bottom of the inning. Siravo took a walk and Healey followed with a two-run blast to make it 15-4. Four batters later, graduate student Alex Rives (Gilford, N.H.) reached on an error to score Hicks to make it 15-5.
  • PSU continued to chip away in the fifth. Senior Luke Sokolski (Waterford, Conn.) walked and Quinn singled to start the inning. Siravo drove in a run with a single and a walk loaded the bases. Another base on balls forced in a run to trim the deficit to 15-7.
  • La Roche got one back in the sixth on a solo shot and added another in the seventh to account for the final score.
By the Numbers (Game One):
  • Quinn went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Siravo also had two hits (2-for-3) with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Healey reached base three times with a single, homer and walk. He drove in two and scored a run.

How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Plymouth State used a two-out rally to plate four runs in the top of the first. Sokolski walked and stole second and junior Sam Malgeri (Stratham, N.H.) drove him in with a double. Malgeri swiped third and Quinn walked before sophomore Brendan Flynn (Arlington, Mass.) added a run-scoring single. Faherty followed with a two-run double to make it 4-0.
  • The Redhawks came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • PSU extended the lead in the third. Malgeri reached on an error and Quinn worked another walk. Malgeri was caught stealing at home, but Flynn walked and Faherty launched a deep drive to left center for a three-run shot to push the lead to 7-3.
  • The Panthers loaded the bases with two down in the fourth, but a ground ball ended the threat.
  • Sokolski ripped a double with one down in the sixth but was stranded.
  • Plymouth State turned a double play in the sixth after La Roche put the first two runners on.
  • The Redhawks used a one-out walk and single to put two runners on in the seventh, but freshman Greg Mayo (Boston, Mass.) got a flyout and ground ball to end the game.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
  • Faherty's dinger was his first collegiate home run, while his five RBIs were a career high.
  • Malgeri singled and doubled in four at bats.
  • Sokolski was on base twice with a double and walk, while Quinn walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
  • Flynn singled and took two walks while also scoring twice.
  • Freshman Elias Bourque (Nashua, N.H.) earned his first career win after striking out six and giving up three runs over his five innings of work.
  • Hicks allowed just a walk in his inning of work, while Mayo pitched a scoreless seventh.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers get into Little East Conference (LEC) play on Mar. 30 when they face Eastern Connecticut State for a pair of games at Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford, Conn. First pitch for the opener is set for noon.
