PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior
Sam Malgeri (Stratham, N.H.) of the Plymouth State University baseball team has been named the PSU Male Athlete of the Month for April, sponsored by the New Hampshire Army National Guard.
Malgeri led the team's regulars with a .364 average for the month, recording 12 hits, a triple, two home runs, and eight RBIs. He consistently found his way on base, reaching safely in nine of the ten games he played. His strong performance in April helped the Panthers to a key sweep of conference rival Western Connecticut State University and a series split with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Malgeri opened the month by reaching base against Colby and Southern Maine. On April 15 against UMass Boston, he blasted a home run to deep center field – his eighth career long ball and first of the season – extending his on-base streak to three games.
Plymouth State knocked off conference rival UMass Dartmouth, 6-3, in the home opener on April 18. Malgeri sparked a rally in the fifth inning by reaching on a hit-by-pitch, stealing third, and ultimately scoring to help PSU secure its first conference win and a 3-3 home record for the month.
Malgeri's bat stayed hot in a doubleheader against WestConn on April 25. In game one, he opened the scoring with an RBI single to left-center, then followed with another RBI in his next at-bat to extend the lead. Later in the game, he launched a two-run homer to right-center to pad the advantage. He finished 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and tied his career-high with four RBIs.
He kept the momentum going in game two, posting a career-high four hits. In the fourth inning, Malgeri narrowly missed a home run, hitting a booming triple off the top of the fence before coming around to score and extend the PSU lead. He reached for a third time later in the game, knocking out the WestConn pitcher, then added a single to right in his final plate appearance for his fifth RBI of the day.
Malgeri added two hits and an RBI against Rhode Island College on April 27, while also swiping his third base of the season. He wrapped up the month against UMass Boston on April 29 with his 12th hit, further solidifying his status as one of the team's top offensive producers.
Malgeri led the team in batting average, slugging percentage, and home runs in April, helping the Panthers secure key LEC victories. He concluded his collegiate career with a .281 average, 68 hits, nine home runs, and 50 RBIs.
Plymouth State ended the season with a 6-22 overall record, going 3-13 in LEC play.
