ONEONTA, N.Y. – Plymouth State University brought the tying run to the plate in the final inning of both games of a non-conference doubleheader, but SUNY Oneonta held on both times to sweep the Panthers, 4-1 and 8-6, at Red Dragon Baseball Field on Saturday.
Trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning of game one, junior
Brayden Michaelson (Charlton, Mass.) ripped a two-out, RBI double to get the Panthers on the board. Senior
Andrew Faherty (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a pinch-hit single to start the seventh and sophomore
Login Desrochers (Raymond, Maine) followed with a base hit, but the Red Dragons escaped the jam with a double play and line out.
Oneonta opened game two with a four-run first. Junior
Sam Salvi (Southborough, Mass.) had a two-run single in a three-run fourth as PSU pulled within 6-5, but the Red Dragons countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Faherty's RBI double cut the deficit to 8-6 in the fifth, and a two-out single in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate before Oneonta worked out of the jam to complete the weekend sweep.
Plymouth State falls to 0-3, while the Red Dragons end the weekend at 5-3.

How it Happened (Game One):
- Junior Josh Worthington (Pownal, Vt.) led off the game with a base hit to center but was stranded on third.
- Worthington reached on an infield hit with two down in the third and again advanced to third, but a groundout ended the inning.
- The Red Dragons scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.
- Desrochers and freshman Joey Dronzank (Hebron, Conn.) had singles in the top of the fifth, but a runner was thrown out at home on a double steal as the game remained 2-0.
- Oneonta used a two-out rally to extend the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
- Salvi walked and scored on Michaelson's double in the sixth to pull within 4-1.
- Faherty and Desrochers had consecutive singles to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but a double play and line out ended the threat.
By the Numbers (Game One):
- Worthington, Michaelson and Desrochers each had two hits, with Michaelson's double the lone extra base hit.
- Worthington added a pair of stolen bases.
- Senior Jack Gintof (Meredith, N.H.) scattered four hits and allowed just two earned runs in his five innings. Classmate Ross Tine (Wethersfield, Conn.) worked a one-two-three inning in relief.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- Plymouth State had two runners on in the top of the first but was unable to score.
- The Red Dragons responded with a four-run bottom of the inning to take the early lead.
- Faherty singled in a run in the second and Salvi drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch to make it 4-2.
- Oneonta got both runs back in the bottom of the inning to lead 6-2.
- Salvi ripped a two-run single in the fourth and a wild pitch allowed graduate student Connor Dobson (South Portland, Maine) to score as the Panthers pulled within 6-5.
- The hosts responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 8-5.
- Faherty had an RBI double in the fifth and PSU had the tying runs in scoring position, but Oneonta escaped the jam.
- Sophomore Anthony Cooley (Brunswick, Maine) had a pinch-hit single in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, but the Red Dragons were able to hold on.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
- Faherty had three hits in four at-bats, drove in two runs and scored once.
- Junior Ryan Morgado (Brentwood, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Salvi reached base twice and drove in three runs.
- Freshman Matthew Hayes (Bellows Falls, Vt.) worked 2.1 scoreless innings of relief in his collegiate debut.
