BB: Panthers nipped in twinbill at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Plymouth State University brought the tying run to the plate in the final inning of both games of a non-conference doubleheader, but SUNY Oneonta held on both times to sweep the Panthers, 4-1 and 8-6, at Red Dragon Baseball Field on Saturday.

Trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning of game one, junior Brayden Michaelson (Charlton, Mass.) ripped a two-out, RBI double to get the Panthers on the board. Senior Andrew Faherty (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a pinch-hit single to start the seventh and sophomore Login Desrochers (Raymond, Maine) followed with a base hit, but the Red Dragons escaped the jam with a double play and line out.

Oneonta opened game two with a four-run first. Junior Sam Salvi (Southborough, Mass.) had a two-run single in a three-run fourth as PSU pulled within 6-5, but the Red Dragons countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Faherty's RBI double cut the deficit to 8-6 in the fifth, and a two-out single in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate before Oneonta worked out of the jam to complete the weekend sweep.

Plymouth State falls to 0-3, while the Red Dragons end the weekend at 5-3.
