BB: Campbell, Desrochers lead offense in setback at Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Senior Ray Campbell (Torrington, Conn.) and sophomore Login Desrochers (Raymond, Maine) had big days at the plate, but Colby-Sawyer College topped Plymouth State University in a non-conference doubleheader at Kelsey Baseball Field on Thursday.
 
Desrochers had three hits and drove in two runs in the opener, but the Chargers used a trio of big innings to earn a 24-11 win. Campbell went 3-for-3 with two doubles in game two, but Colby-Sawyer scored five runs in the second inning to build a lead, and PSU's late rally came up short in an 8-3 setback.
 
Plymouth State falls to 3-17, while Colby-Sawyer goes to 14-17.
 
 
The Basics:

How it Happened (Game One):
  • Desrochers ripped an RBI single as PSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Seniors Andrew Faherty (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Brendan Flynn (Arlington, Mass.) added run-scoring hits in a four-run second to push the lead to 6-0.
  • Colby-Sawyer erupted for six runs in the bottom of the inning, but freshman Owen Webber (Bow, N.H.) answered with an RBI double in the third to give PSU a 7-6 lead.
  • The Chargers scored twice in the bottom half, but PSU responded again with three runs in the fourth. Campbell had an RBI double, and freshman Maddox Turck (Goffstown, N.H.) also drove in a run.
  • The hosts notched another six runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 14-10 lead.
  • PSU got one run back in the fifth, but Colby-Sawyer closed out the game with a 10-run sixth.
By the Numbers (Game One):
  • Desrochers went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Flynn singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in two.
  • Campbell doubled, drove in two runs, and scored once.
 
How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Colby-Sawyer grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • Campbell and freshman Joey Dronzank (Hebron, Conn.) hit doubles in the second to tie the game at 1-1, but scored the Chargers responded with five runs in the bottom half to take a 6-1 lead.
  • The hosts tacked on two more runs in the third.
  • Flynn and Campbell roped back-to-back doubles to start the sixth. One run scored on a wild pitch, and junior Cam Manning (North Woodstock, N.H.) drove in another to pull PSU within 8-3.
  • Junior Sam Salvi (Southborough, Mass.) doubled in the seventh, but PSU was unable to rally.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
  • Campbell went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
  • Flynn doubled and scored, while Dronzank doubled and drove in a run.
  • Five of the Panthers' six hits went for extra bases.
  • Junior Dillon Below (Derry, N.H.) allowed just two hits and struck out three over the final 3.2 innings.
 
Up Next:
  • PSU returns to LEC play on Saturday (Apr. 18) when UMass Dartmouth comes to Parish Field for a pair of games. The opener is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
