TONY GUARINO ('50): A former four-year basketball and three-year baseball starter at Plymouth Teachers College under legendary coach John Foley, Guarino enjoyed nearly 30 years as a successful teacher, coach and athletic director at various stops in Northern New England. He was a Basketball Coach of the Year in New Hampshire in 1956 and Vermont in 1963.

A native of Lebanon, N.H., Guarino spent three years (1950-53) as teacher and basketball and baseball coach at Lancaster (N.H.) High School and six years (1953-59) as teacher and basketball coach at Gorham (N.H.) High School, winning one state title. He then served four years (1959-63) at Spaulding H.S. in Barre, Vt., leading the basketball team to three straight state championships and representing Vermont in the New England Tourney at Boston Garden. The 1961-62 team was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 as the best high school team in the history of Vermont.

Guarino moved on to Johnson State (Vt.) College, where he taught and coached basketball and baseball for five years (1963-68). He also coached football at Lisbon (Maine) High School for two years (1968-70) before serving as Athletic and Physical Education Director in Exeter, N.H., from 1970-79, earning N.H. Athletic Director of the Year in 1977.
